Slow Re-Arranging Categories

Does your install hang or just respond extremely slowly when dragging and dropping  categories in the Magento backend? Are you sick of seeing the popup loading icon? Fear not, a simple change can help avoid this annoying situation. It’s all to do with the Indexing, Magento will update the index every time you drag and drop.

To solve this problem, complete the following steps:

  • Go to System > Index Management
  • Press “Select All” on the left
  • In the actions Menu change the index mode to “Manual Update”
  • Press submit
  • Now try moving a category around

Remember to change back to automatic indexing after you’ve finished!

Orders Missing From Order Reports

Are you constantly viewing incomplete order information in Magento’s order reports admin section?

First of all click the link at the top of the page titled: To refresh last day’s statistics, click here.

If this doesn’t work, go to:

  • Reports > Refresh Statistics
  • Tick the box that says ‘Orders’ and change the drop down to ‘Refresh Lifetime Statistics’

Try running your report again and you should see any gaps now filled in.

Path “sitemap.xml” is not available and cannot be used.

If you ever need to have a sitemap for each store created under a single Magento installation, you will probably face an error about the unavailability of your specified path for the creation of the sitemap.

Regardless of the filename you may specify, you will get the following error all the time:

Path "mysitemap.xml" is not available and cannot be used.

As ever, we don’t have a clear error message leading us to a solution. Basically, what’s happening is that Magento wants to use the name sitemap.xml for each sitemap created. This is obviously a problem if you have two sitemaps.

The simple solution to this is to create each sitemap in a separate directory:

/sitemaps/site2/sitemap.xml

Relevant for users wanting to create a Magento Google sitemap in a multistore installation.
